Depression Drug Side Effects

Appropriate opportunity is when an individual is in search of for a medication or medications to cure depression it can be difficult to know where to turn. There are so many medications both with prescriptions depression drugs through a medical physician, a few medications mostly in the form of various vitamins and minerals which are over the counter and special prescribed diet plans available.

Depression medication works in a variety of ways depending on the severity of the depression diagnosis of the individual involved. All of the known depression drugs or antidepressants fall into three main categories, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, or MAOI’s, tricyclics or TCA’s and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRI’s. All of these medications aid in fighting depression, but in various degrees.

The SSRI is by definition stand for Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor. This is generally because the side effects of the medications involved in the SSRI class of antidepressants are generally more tolerable than are those of other types of antidepressants, and they also generally work well. Some of the more advanced medications used are :

• Fluoxetine, which is Prozac and sarafem
• Paroxetine, which is Paxil
• Sertraline, which is Zoloft
• Citalopram, which is Celexa
• Escitalopram, which is Lexapro

The SSRI’s act on a chemical in the brain called serotonin which helps to regulate the individuals mood swings, but it also plays a role in digestion, pain, sleep, mental clarity, and other bodily functions. As is evident of this there are side effects for the individual and those close family members and friends to watch for, warning signs indicative that something is not functioning properly. The majority of the side effects include drowsiness, sleep difficulties, and sometimes nausea. Most of the individuals who do experience these side effects will also notice how they stop after a short time as the body re- adjusts to the new medication. In adults over the age of sixty-five, SSRI’s are of more intense concern as this type of medication may increase the risk for falls, fractures, and some bone loss.

Newer atypical antidepressant depression drugs also have a few side effects which target other neurotransmitters either alone or in addition to serotonin. The depression effects seem to show up through nor epinephrine and dopamine. These antidepressants include :

• Bupropion (Wellbutrin) and Mirtazapine (Remeron)
• Venlafaxine (Effexor) and Trazodone (Desyrel)
• Duloxetine (Cymbalta) and Nefazodone (Serzone)

Many of the individuals who suffer from this malady ranging from minor depression to severe depression the treatments are there to help assist all. All who suffer and are taking any one of the various medications will also need constant depression support and there are many support groups that any individual can attend. The individual will need to discuss with the medical physician which group will be best for the level of depression and go from there. These individuals will have to realize to read the labels on the medication though before they decide to hop into their car and drive off to a meeting or gathering. Some of these medications carry warnings not to drive while under the influence because they are mind altering depression drugs.

However, the individual has plans of evening or late night travels it might be a recommendation not to travel alone. With family member support and close friends to turn too any one of them will be happy to attend a meeting or forum with the individual and they can in turn drive back and forth so everyone remains safe.
