Zoloft – sertraline – Lustral dosages

Question:

Hi, I am taking 50mg/day Lustral which is the same as Zoloft (generic name sertraline) for depression. Is this dosage enough? How long does it take to work? What dosages is anyone else on? Thanks, Paul

Response:

Paul, I was on Zoloft up until a few weeks ago (was off and on it for the last 4 years).  For me 100mg was the right amount.  And it takes a couple of weeks for it to really settle in with you.. that is from my experience with it. If 50mg does not seem to be enough for you, please talk to your dr. about increasing the dosage. Paul, I forgot to mention that my PCP switched me from Zoloft to Effexor XR started with 37.5mg for 1 week then to 75mg for one week (to see if tolerated well) then moved me up to 150mg daily.  I started the 150mg last Thursday.  So we shall see. I’ve been on Zoloft since 1992 or 1993 (I can’t remember).  I started out at 100mg and dropped down to 50mg for the majority of the time I’ve taken it. I just went to the psychiatrist today and he upped me to 100mg again.  My MS has been acting up and this tends to increase my depression. — Rachelle Remove "123" to reply — if it’s there. http://www.corecomm.net/~rachelle/index.html http://hometown.aol.com/cleodemko/family/index.htm Paul Jones <Paul_Jo…@btinternet.com> wrote in message

Paul: I was started at 50mg/bedtime, & was on that for ages. Was upped to 100mg/bedtime about 1.5 yrs ago, cos of severe spasticity in the back of my neck/head, which was causing migraine-like problems for about 2 mos. (I guess Zoloft helps w/ spasticity a bit). People are generally started at a low-ish dose, as you are on, until it’s determined whether it’s doin it’s job, or whether more is needed. Most antidepressants take about 10-14 days to really start to have a noticable effect. Doages can then be further adjusted, depending on how you’re doin on them, situational circumstances that may affect depressive reactions to stress, all that hooey. Hope that helps! Hope the Zoloft helps, too! :-) Lin  ~~ If you can’t be nice, at least have the decency to be vague ~~

Hi Paul, I don’t know how long you have been on the Zoloft, but it does take a few weeks to kick in.  However, if you have given it a few weeks and you are still as depressed as you seem, then have your doctor due a blood test to see if your body is absorbing the drug properly.  I was on it for awhile and it didn’t work for me.  They did the blood test and it was not being absorbed by my body.  I found another one that did work. I currently take Serzone because it also prevents migraines–nice side benefit. Hope this helps. God bless, Lois

Hi Paul, It takes about two or three weeks to really notice the effect.  Unfortunately, maximum side-effects, like tiredness, dizziness etc. occur in the same period (if they are going to).  This causes some people to give up before the therapeutic effect is achieved.  Hang in there and keep taking them.  I’m not qualified to advise aobut dose.  You should ask your doctor about this.  Also, if you feel too sedated by Zoloft, you may be better on Prozac because it has a slightly alerting effect.  Do discuss it with your doctor.  Are you having counselling as well?  I find journalling helps a lot, too, although this newsgroup can serve a similar purpose, and you get feedback and support as well. I have to tell you that I don’t have personal experience with SSRI’s (i.e. I’ve never used them).  But my husband has and does, and he would have committed suicide by now without them.  I also have some knowledge about the subject from my partly-completed psych degree. Hope this helps.   Carmel Paul Jones wrote: > Hi, > I am taking 50mg/day Lustral which is the same as Zoloft (generic name > sertraline) for depression. Is this dosage enough? Hi Paul: 100mg of Zoloft a day for me, first thing in the am — taking it at night kept me up…I’m in active relapse though, cervical lesion like a darn jelly bean on the ol’ MRI, shining away…it takes a couple of weeks to kick in though.  Best of luck. Thank you all for this. It’s still early days – I hope it is reactive depression – I don’t fancy this forever. Thanks, Paul

Paul:  I am using 125mg of Zoloft now.    I have been taking it now for about 1 year and feel that it has helped. Even from the first when I was at 50 mg I could see some help but it wasn’t enough so after a couple months the Dr. increased it to 100mg. And a couple months ago when I was under a lot of stress (don’t you just love kids) it was increased to 125mg.  This may be reduced back to 100 when things calm down around here (when is it ever calm when you are a Mom) Any way see your Dr. this may not be the right dosage for you or you may need to try one of the many other anti-depressants that are out there.
