SAM-e and Ecstacy problem

Question:

Why the cunting fuck would you even think about taking Ecstacy when you (a) are depressed and (b) on medication for depression ????  I think some people in this world must have been born with no brain ……. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hello, About a year ago, I was taking SAM-e, 1,200 mg per day and I was doing very well.  My depression was pretty much in remission, although I wasn’t doing nearly as well as had done in the first few weeks, and I senses it was pooping out.  Then, one day, a friend offered me the drug Ecstasy and I took it.  I had taken it a couple of times in the past and found it to be enjoyable, but not that great. When I took the ecstasy, I had a strange reaction.  I became pretty sleepy and very nervous.  I felt okay the next day, but the day after that, I had a splitting headache and it lasted for several days.  My mood level dropped over the next couple of weeks and the SAM-e stopped working completely.  I felt very depressed again.  Is it possible that mixing a drug like ecstasy one time with SAM-e could cause SAM-e to permanently stop working?  It doesn’t seem to make sense. Thanks, Thomas Before you buy.

Response:

Ecstasy causes rebound depression because it depletes the brain’s supply of seratonin.    -Emily

I don’t believe SAM-e has ever been demonstrated to be an effective antidepressant in any decent clinical trials with any sort of significant population. Maybe not, but it works dude.  SAM-e is far more effective than St. John’s Wort (which as far as I could tell had no effect at all, but then I never took it consistently enough.)

Placebos work too.  My point is not that SAM-e does or doesn’t work.  I am sure SAM-e works for many many people.  My point is only that I don’t think it’s been shown to work better then a placebo.    Ecstasy is another name for MDA or MDMA, which are shorthand names for MethyleneDeoxyAmphetamine and MethyleneDeoxyMethAmphetamine.  Their effects are somewhat similar to Amphetamine and Methamphetamine, but also somewhat different. Holy cow, 1,200 mg per day????  That’s gotta be expensive.  I’m squeamish as it is just taking one pill (200 mg) per day.  1,200 mg is between $6 and $8 per day. And also, just one pill a day seems to be working well enough for me.  Though it’s hard to tell if it’s the SAM-e or just the current improved circumstances surrounding my life right now.  I think it’s the latter actually. Sorry I can’t be of help with the Ecstacy.  My only advice is not to take Ecstacy ever again.  Powerful drugs like Ecstacy can be very dangerous, and can have permanent or semi-permanent effects of all kinds. It’s possible that taking SAM-e made you feel better initially, but only indirectly because at least you were doing something to try and feel better.  And it’s possible that this indirect effect of SAM-e on your mood was slowly begining to wear thin since it wasn’t really in fact doing anything for your mood directly.  It’s possible that the ecstasy had a direct, if only short lived, effect on your mood.  It’s possible that after really feeling good from the ecstasy, even tho only for a short time, you then realized just how shitty you’ve been feeling for some time now and just how little the SAM-e has been doing. So yes, it’s possible that mixing a drug like ecstacy one time with SAM-e could cause the SAM-e to permanently stop working. There once was a really rich guy who lost all his money.  He was interviewed and asked what happened to him??  How did he lose all his money??  He replied; "I lost my money slowly, one dollar at a time …. until suddenly I was poor." Dude, Do a search on the web. It’s well known that Ecstacy makes you happy at the expense of depression later on. In fact if you aren’t careful it can cause permanent depression expecially in old age. I think it is time to get on a real anti-depressant. SamE is a cute little drug that helps people who are mildly depressed, but I think by taking Ecstacy you have graduated to severe depression and now the SAM-e is not enough. And do yourself a favor and don’t do anymore E. Hi Jethro What you took was a speedball of some kind. Exstacy does not excist anymore. Mdma as a medication should not have the effect it had on you. Because Mdma is no longer a prescribtion drug what you get is some sort of street speedball made in laboratories who knows where:) With kind regards Kim. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Hello, About a year ago, I was taking SAM-e, 1,200 mg per day and I was doing very well.
