I tried St. John's Wort today

Question:

Today I tried St. John’s Wort for the first time and so far I think it has increased my sense of wellness. But I wonder what other users of St. John Wort think about the herb. It is a rather mildly priced herb which fits right into my budget. I purchased it at Wal-Mart SuperCenter. Please post to this group with your comments especially about Kava.

=================================== I have been taking SJW twice daily for the past 6 months.  This has definitely helped me in dealing with IBS.  It has given me a more positive outlook (seeing the cup as half-full, rather than half-empty).  I have no side effects from SJW, and it has greatly lessened my pain and suffering with the "D" type IBS. Besides vitamins and an occasional Imodium tablet (when I travel), I do not take any other medications.  I tried Librax and Levsin-SL in the past but had no luck with either of these drugs.  The SJW has been a godsend!

I wanted to take this but was told that anyone with high or labile blood pressure should not take it, as it can raise your BP.

Response:

I’ve been taking St. John’s Wort for about 3 weeks now (3 pills a day, at the dosage recommended for depression), and I can definitely see a difference in my emotional state.  Little things that usually get me stressed out haven’t been effecting me at all, and I generally feel less depressed and anxious every day.  I noticed a difference right away too, it was amazing. As for digestive help, I haven’t been able to determine that yet.  Since starting St. Johns Wort, I’ve had one week when I was majorly stressed out (this was an unusually bad case of anxiety) and had also been overeating, and my IBS really acted up.  So that week the St. Johns Wort may have made things better, but I couldn’t tell because it was such an emotionally horrible week.  Since that week I’ve had one IBS episode right before I was to take a trip, which is something that usually does happen to me, so the St. Johns Wort didn’t help any that time. My IBS is mostly stress-related, so my hope is that if I feel less anxious, then I won’t have as many stressful feelings to get my guts in an uproar. I’ve read that it can sometimes take 6 weeks before you can tell if St. John’s Wort is successful, so I’m going to hang in there. Good luck, E. I am interested in hearing more about how St. John’s Wort is working for you. My IBS is also pretty much stress related now that I have figured out a diet for myself. I have these mini anxiety attacks alot, which my doctor says is just everyday stress, but the next day my intestines act up. I seemt o get upset and stressed out by things easily also, which again adds to the IBS. So, something to help with this, and also with the bouts of depression we all seem to get would be nice! I don’t like medicines though, and have been leary about trying this, even though I know that it is not a drug. :-)      Beth                                                 kitte…@juno.com

Remember, sometimes we just "can’t do it on our own" and expect to get on with our lives.

Response:

Beth, What I can tell from taking St. John’s Wort so far is that it seems to help with small bouts of stress and gives me a sense of well-being.  It doesn’t seem to completely get rid of anxiety, just lessens its hold on me.  I don’t get anxiety attacks, but I’m a chronic worrier, always have been.  There are some times when my IBS acts up because of certain foods or overeating or "just because".  Stress does make things a lot worse. I don’t like taking medicines either if I can avoid them, but I decided to try St. John’s wort in lieu of things like Prozac or other anti-depressants because I’d heard SJW had less side effects and it’s not addictive.  The main warnings I’ve seen are that it should never be taken with other anti-depressants, and it can cause sensitivity to sunlight in some people. If you’re worried about its possible effects on you or any drug interactions, talk to your doctor and see what he/she thinks. E. I’ve been taking three 300 mg. tablets a day three times a day (usually with meals), which adds up to 900 mg. a day.  Each tablet contains .3% Hypericin, which is the chemical that makes SJW do what it does.  After researching SJW in books and on the Internet, I found this dosage was the one usually recommended for mild to severe depression.  However, some people may be able to get good results with a smaller dosage. !!!Please know that I have no medical training, this is just what I have concluded from my own research!!! What’s best for me may not work for you. I suggest that you go to the library and read up on SJW or do some Internet searches, or ask your doctor about it and then decide what dosage is best for you.  Also, it might not be a good idea to take SJW if you’re already on a prescription medication, especially anti-depressants.  Check with your doctor or pharmacist to see if there are any risks of bad drug interactions. thanks for the info, I did a little research which seems to support the 300mg/3x daily dosage you mentioned.  I picked up a bottle this evening and will give it a try starting tomorrow.  I’m a little discouraged to hear that it takes 3 weeks to kick in, but I guess these things take time. I’ll keep you posted on the results. -j – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> I’ve been taking three 300 mg. tablets a day three times a day (usually with > meals), which adds up to 900 mg. a day.  Each tablet contains .3% Hypericin, > which is the chemical that makes SJW do what it does.  After researching SJW > in books and on the Internet, I found this dosage was the one usually > recommended for mild to severe depression.  However, some people may be able > to get good results with a smaller dosage. > !!!Please know that I have no medical training, this is just what I have > concluded from my own research!!! What is St Jonh s wort i now it is a herb ?

Response:

I’ve been taking St Johns for about 3 months – it has been doing wonders for me!  I have the diarrhea side of it and St Johns actually started to constipate me.  But now I take one pill in the morning, Citracel before supper and one pill at night – it has really helped.  Now, I still have my days but they arent as many and I’ve actually been able to go on trips without being afraid. It did take about the 3 weeks to notice any difference so hang in there.  I much rather take a natural herb than prescription medicine – so if you feel that way, I really recommend this.  I’ve never considered myself depressed or edgy and I’ve not really noticed any effects on my "emotional state" like its supposed to do – but as long as it helps my IBS, that’s all that matters to me!  Good luck all!

I too felt I was doing really well with the SJW, but started getting constipated and quit.  I think I will try the Citrucel too and see if that will help.  Do you take the full recommended amount of Citrucel and is it difficult to get down? >I’ve actually been able to go on trips without being >afraid.

That is my dream!  I love to travel, but it is a nightmare, just the excitement of going on a trip sends me into an attack and forget about standing in a line to ride an attraction at an amusement park. >It did take about the 3 weeks to notice any difference so hang in >there.

Hope it doesn’t take this long with restarting it…I leave on vacation in two weeks. Thanks for the info. Karen

Response:

Just another testimonial: I have been taking SJW for about a year, and, in combination with iron and calcium supplements (I’m vegan) I haven’t had problems in months. The few i have had were due to traceable problems. Fortunately, I don’t have the constipation problems – this may have something to do with the vegan diet. I have been told though that iron supplements can help IBS sufferers. Iron supplements sure don’t help me and I have been on and off of them for years due to anemia. Karen GoH ‘72 Next trip: Aug 16 – 27, DxL
