Question:
Oooo…I’ve done that. I prefer a big honkin’ bowl of cereal – cookie crisp is my favorite. Or re-heated pasta with butter. Oh how do I maintain this fit body? I’ll never know….

I CAN’T BELIEVE HALCION DIN’T HELP! This one of the most potent sleep drugs out there. I thought it was gonna kill me…I would wake up, because it felt like my breathing was going to stop.
Response:
Clonazepam works for me, but YBMV (your brain may vary) Kimberly, who sleeps rather well these days

If you want to go the drug route – Trazadone works great – but you’ll probably wake up with a "hang over" and have a hard time getting up. I’ve found the following more natural remedy to be helpful in relaxing and helps to "fall asleep" About an hour before bedtime – get off the computer or doing chores, work. Start winding down. Heat up a cup of milk (if you boil milk it makes it easier to digest) and put a little bit of real butter (ghee is best – that’s clarified butter), a dash of tumeric and some grated fresh ginger. Sounds gross – but is suprisingly good and relaxing. You can also try some Valerian Root and Kava Kava before bedtime. Be sure to get a good brand that is standardized (which means it is made from the roots of the plants and not the twigs and flowers – so you get a theraputic dose). Don’t get the liquid formulas. You can check out more info on herbs that help sleep in Dr. Harold Bloomfield’s book "How to Heal Anxiety with Herbs". According to Dr. B. Kava Kava should not be taken forever. Good luck. I hate to say this, but I have given up. If I sleep, great. If I don’t then I don’t. Eventually, after 2 or 3 days, I finally crash enough so I can sleep. I don’t take any sleeping medication. I figure it probably wouldn’t work anyway. Denise ddumas4138

Drug-wise, I don’t have any information. Any drug I have ever taken for sleep, besides Ambien, has always left me too groggy the next day, which makes me depressed, and so on, and so on… Even Ambien, after taking for a few nights in a row did the same thing. When I can’t sleep, I try cognitive things. All the things I’m sure you know about. I have two things I try. The first is exercise – but long before I try to go to sleep. I know that I will sleep well on a night where I have exercised that day or evening. The second is not trying to sleep. I have a time limit. If I’m laying there for more than an hour, I get up and just pretend it isn’t bed time. It usually means I lose another hour’s sleep, but eventually I fall asleep. Sometimes I don’t. Then I know I’m in trouble. I have to let you know that my sleep problems were what eventually led to my getting help. If my sleep problems (caused by my bipolar illness) were not so severe, I never would have gotten help. Why? Well, I was working full-time and had to be at work at 8:00am everyday. Every other, and sometimes every, night I would get 2 or 3 hours sleep. So, I was calling in sick a lot. Which made my paranoia go through the roof, anxiety increase, depression worsen, etc. Finally, I just stopped going to work then went on disability. The rest is history, but I no longer have severe sleep problems. I am pretty strict with myself when it comes to sleep. No more late nights is the rule! That usually starts a cycle that’s pretty hard to stop. Good Luck. I hope this helps even a little bit.
