I would second this notion. There is good reason to think ECT is useful in some cases of depression. It has never been shown to be very useful in OCD. The only time I think anyone with OCD should consider it is if they also have servere depression that has not responded to any other treatment. — Jim Claiborn PhD ABDD If the rich could pay other people to die for them the poor could make a wonderful living. I think anyone considering ECT for OCD should take a look at Toxic Psychiatry by Peter Breggin, M.D. pages 184-215 and 260-264. Wayne Beeman, M.S. N.C.S.P (Nat. Assoc. School Psychologists) Wayne Beeman wayneps…@aol.com
Response:
I believe that OCD and depression can work in a kind of vicious cycle. A person with OCD can so obsess about a frightening or depressing thought that depression grows out of the OCD. Then the more depressed a person becomes, the more obsessive he becomes. So even though ECT has not been shown to be effective in treating OCD, indirectly it may help the OCD patient by helping lift him out of the depression that is making him more susceptible to OCD. I’m not a therapist or other professional in medical field. Just a person who has spent a lot of time and effort studying OCD.
