danny gatton

Question:

Nope. He was walking near his home when he was picked up. His wife called the police because he had brought home a stranger and she was scared of him wanted him to leave. Roy got mad and took a walk (after ripping the phone out of the wall). And the window the shirt was tied to (that ‘reportedly Roy hung him self from) was low enough that Roy had to sit on the floor to hang himself. Friends that attended the funeral reported unexplained wounds on Roy’s head. Parker

GuitarPlayer Mag did a big story on him. They also mentioned the big multi-disk CD set of his that just cam out. Apparently it’s not cheap, but is targeted more towards real guitar virtuoso listening audiences. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – a friend recently played me a few danny gatton tracks and it was incredible. i’ve never really listened to him before believing him (wrongly!)to be more mainstream c+w than rock. but on closer listening he seems to be a cross between jeff beck and roy buchanan. can any one tell me a bit more. i know that he died a few years ago but i can’t seem to find his albums anywhere (UK). where can i get his music? he seems to be really rated by musicians.

Response:

The cover of the redneck jazz album shows the LP with the Magic dingus Box. Yeah, that was his mom…they had problems with some of the other labels as to the rights to some of the music, so for a while you couldn’t buy anything while it was tied up in court. Blaming the record labels or anyone else for Danny not making it commercially is stupid.  Despite his virtuousity, Danny never marketed himself well and he would have been even harder to market to the masses.  If it is necessary to blame someone for him blowing his head off, then there is no one to blame for his suicide except for himself.  Sure, he had depression, but he also knew that and could have gotten help.  Instead he left a little girl without a daddy.

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I didn’t know he played a Paul. I always thought of him as strictly a Tele man. Your right too about the depression. It’d be very difficult to know your a truly great musician but not have anything financially to show for it. A friend called the 800 number on his official website several years ago .. to order a couple of CD’s. He said the lady who answered said she was his mom. He said she chatted about how he never got the break he deserved to make it to the big time. Plus she told him the labels were making all the money off the re-issues you see in the stores. I don’t know if she really was his mom but the rest of it doesn’t surprise me. It really is sad though. I don’t think there’s much he couldn’t do on a guitar and still sound just like himself. A unique player and great talent. Crispy Andy … what kind of person was he? Did you get a chance to chat with him? Amazing you were able to see a true talent like him in a small club. One of his biggest road blocks to national reorganization was his unwillingness to tour. I’ve heard a number of stories of various artist’s getting turned down for huge gigs because he wouldn’t travel. IMO he’s the best Tele player to ever grace this planet…. bar none! I only wish I could of seen him live. Another death that makes no sense. I wonder if it’s some sort of Tele Voodoo goin on… Crispy Regrettably, I never did talk to him, just clapped and yelled a lot. He was pretty quiet on stage, though. They would turn the lights down real dark, and he’d play the hell ou this Les Paul with the Dingus Box (Leslie/Lights controller). I’d sit up in the front row, actually front table, and try to cop some licks. No way – he held his right hand like a closed claw, you couldn’t see what he was doing at all. They were rolls anyway, and what are rolls to a neophyte? I have heard that he had made recording deals that didn’t work out quite right. If he had stumbled into the "right" representation, things would be different. I have some insights into his depression. If you KNEW you were the best Tele player on the planet, and "this is all you got for it", wouldn’t you be tempted to be depressed? I would. Way too sad that he’s gone. Andy Gatton is primo, super bad-ass, kick down the doors, eel-fingered guitar slammer…my opinion…if you can standit, there is an album called …"Redneck Jazz Explosion" live in DC with Gatton on guitar and Buddy Emmons (pedal steel wizzard/Emmons pedal steel guitars) doing jazz…unreal… john…I have several bootlegs of Danny…write me and maybe I could knock some off for you…Anything I can do to draw awareness to this amazing guitarist, I will do …too bad he kakked himself several years back…weird…he and Roy both committed suicide… If you believe the "official story" about Roy. I used to see Danny monthly in Va., small club, front row center. Andy

Yeah, the 3 CD bootleg is called "Orphans" and is a soundboard recording of all sets from both nights (12/30 and 12/31/78).  The original show was broadcast live on WHFS back when they were still a progressive radio station.  I’ll have to dredge my copy up from a friend who has it now and see which songs are different from the explosion album

I saw Danny a few times at clubs in the DC area and once when he played the pub at william and Mary in 81.  I met him, seemed nice enough, but never hung out with him.  I guy I used to party with was a backup singer on the redneck jazz album and he said danny was nice, usually quiet, and moody. Now as for Roy, are you saying that the Fairfax county PD made him get drunk and drive and then strung him up?  With your comment about the "official story" you are spewing nonsensical bullshit.  In another post you talk about understanding some of danny’s depression…what about roy’s depression compounded by relapsing alcohol/drug addiction?

Sorry, that’s not my style. What I did imply is that the circumstances are unclear, and I explicitly said that there was "an official story" that you could believe or not. What could be wrong with saying that? There’s lots of commentary on the web about his death, mostly saying that there may be more to the story than just a simple "suicide". It appears that he used his t-shirt to hang himself, at a time when he was vulnerable (drunk, in jail, angry, depressed). These could have been the only factors, except: He was picked up drunk and probably belligerent, there are indications he fought with his wife. As a result, he may have been subdued, possibly too aggressively. We are told he managed to hang himself with a t-shirt, not easy even if sober. The official story is that it was a "suicide". One is free to believe that or not. I’m not making any charges here (I have no first-hand experience), I’m simply pointing out that it’s controversial. More info, opinion, commentary, or nonsensical BS (you choose): Beating: http://www.mnblues.com/review/2001/roybuchananamericanaxe-tg.html Suspicious: http://www.yee.ch/~jwinter/rbuch_memories.html Killed: http://members.tripod.com/~Slash_locomotive/buchanan/buchpage.htm l Choke hold: http://www.yee.ch/~jwinter/rbuch.html …etc., etc… Try Google: Search "roy.buchanan suicide" for lots more. Never looked into it, I never did see Roy around central Va., so I wasn’t following him other than on his records. OTOH, Danny was a regular in my town, and his death hit me pretty hard, it made me think about how I’d stopped following his live performances and records because I got distracted, and it made me think about how fine all of his music was. All the CDs mentioned so far are excellent, but if anyone is looking for the single best one-CD introduction to Danny Gatton, pick up a copy of "Portraits."  Released posthumously, it’s a mix of styles and sounds that covers Danny’s incredibly wide range about as well as one CD can, plus — best of all — it ends with three live cuts that absolutely killer and will give you the best sense of what Danny was all about in live gigs.  The closer, his signature "Orange Blossom Medley," is absolutely jaw-dropping.  I’m hoping that there is more in vaults like this that will be released some day. Believe me folks, "Portraits" is the one to get first if you’ve never heard Danny Gatton.  On Big Mo Records.

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Dan is more accurate than max here, although I’m sure somebody probably called Danny the greatest unknown guitar player at some point. He definitely had some pudgy hands, and Roy was the one mentioned with the stones, although so was another DC area guitar guy, Nils Lofgren. Danny did a bunch of amazing stuff, from his first LP (Danny and the Fat Boys, "American Music") through his last stuff on Electra, although the Electra material is much weaker in my opinion. Another similarity with Roy Buchanan was that despite getting signed by big labels he never could find commercial success.  Both were rather homely men with crap voices whose stage presence was entirely through their mastery of the guitar…not really conducive to big label success. Danny’s best stuff was the earlier material before folks tried making him

Buchanan was the one who was called "The World’s Best Unknown Guitar Player", and there was a PBS television special with that title ( or something like it).
