<< am i supposed to leave? Diversity is what makes this group interesting. Please stay. Bob ( NOT a teen-ager)

their fingers typing the following: it seems that teens are genearlly becoming banished to asdt. i doubt i would like to leave. it seems that we go over this theme over and over again. there are teens that like to be with teens, there are teens that like to be with adults. let us be free and make our choices. angel.
As far as I am concerned, ANYONE who suffers from depression is welcome here. While ASDT may be for teens only, you are probably mature enough to choose where you want to be. After all, you’re mature enough to recognize that you have depression. Stay around Angel. This can be a fun place! Not only that, but ASD was started in 1993 by some kids in high school. Bev was in high school in 1993? (i thought he was one of the founding fathers.)
The first "control message" that actually started ASD was sent in the spring of 1993 by a kid who was in high school at the time. But he never actually became "part" of ASD because it wasn’t carried by his own server for a year or so. Bev was in fact one of the "early" ASDers, and he has given his impressions of what ASD was like back in about 1994. But I have no idea how old he is. He seems "ageless" to me.

There have _always_ been teens in ASD, far as I can tell.

One of the few things that allowed me to survive adolescence was contact with adults. I had very close friends of my own age, but they were going through the same difficulties that hindered me. On our own, we would never have seen beyond our problems; we would never have been able to put our problems in perspective and seen them for what they were — the normal frustrations of growing and learning. And as for the abnormal frustrations linked with depression… forget it. None of my peers would have been able to help me. Adults were the ones who led me to understand that many of my problems were temporary — hey, adolescence *is* hell! — and that life would be different for me in the years to come. Without that heightened perspective, I would have given up. It gave me the courage to stay alive. And so, if I had had access to something like ASD at the time, I would have ignored any "teen" site and spent my time with adults. No one could have persuaded me otherwise. Mark Dillon
Response:
Personally, I am _glad_ there are teenagers on ASD. It wasn’t so long ago that I was a teenager. :) Back then, I wish I could have benefitted from the wealth of experience to be found here.
I agree. Though my "Troubled" thread probably contributed to starting this debate I never intended to suggest that nobody under 18 should be here. My thoughts were more about how I, as an adult, need to figure out what my boundaries and responsibilities are toward others on ASD. There are many people here, both over and under 18, whom I like and respect. Kelly Everything that is is holy.

I don’t think it is healthy to "banish" teens to asdt. I would think that such a forum would be to pedophiles what shit is to flies. I’d rather have you kids in here where I know that many of us adults are trying to protect you from predators. — Tara Ballance Montreal, Canada – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – it seems that teens are genearlly becoming banished to asdt. i doubt i would like to leave. it seems that we go over this theme over and over again. there are teens that like to be with teens, there are teens that like to be with adults. let us be free and make our choices.

Well it’s hard to say. It’s like a double standard. Teen’s can go to ASD, but it would be rude for an adult to go to ASDT. I like your posts though. Now that I’ve gotten my little politically correct jab in… If posting to ASD helps you get through depression do it. If you can help somebody in ASD then do it. Realize one thing though, some of the people have been fighting the battle with depression longer than you’ve been alive. I’m not one of them, but some may get offended if you try to help them. I personally am happy your here. I envy the fact that you know you’re depressed. I wish I would have known in high school. I might not be so far behind now, wondering where the time went. I am hoping that your experiences won’t lead to a life of regret. Maybe seeing our posts and our pain, can lead you to a path of happiness. Try not to feel our pain, because you should be excited about life. There are so many things, you have yet to experience in your lifetime, enjoy and good luck on the journey angel. I hope it gets better from here. Stuart let us be free and make our choices. angel. Teacher: Well, at least there’s one thing I can say about your son. Patent: What’s that? Post wherever you need to. If some people don’t like it, that’s not your problem. Do you really expect to please everyone on a depression newsgroup? We’re depressed, we don’t like much of anything.

x-no-archive:yes (snip) But … do you think it’s wrong for adults to tell you when they think you’re making serious mistakes that endanger your health and physical safety? I think for any teen that spends time in ASD, that’s going to happen. It’s a natural consequence of youth. -Skorch ^,,^<
IMO: Not a natural consequence of youth, but a natural consequence of caring. If you care about someone, teen or adult, and they are making serious mistakes that endanger their health and physical safety, aren’t you going to tell them what you think? Especially in asd. (moreso than in RL) Deb
Response:
Seems like we go through this issue every so often. Personally, I see no reason for teens to leave asd. James
Yea, I think we go through this quite a bit because of the fact that we have mental illness and some of us (not I) have a hard time being themselves around teens because they fear what the consequences might be. All I say is be safe and set limits to your interactions with asders me included. There are limits I have set for my own reasons so it really aint bad it is just safety. For those people who have problems with teens here killfile them. Everybody has a right to be here, this is not a monitored group. Melia

i confess this frustrates me a fair bit.
me too. quite a bit. teens are *not* "generally becoming banished to asdt." there has been no proclamation, no secret vote of adults, no groundswell of public opinion. a few adults have wondered out loud whether teens in this group would find asdt a safer or healthier place than asd; and other adults have agreed or disagreed. that’s all.
are you sure?
i’ll need to hire spied to see do you have secret meeting at baltimore..
if that is so, then it is alright with me, but it is not alright when people go from "that person needs help now" to "that person/s shouldn’t be here to get that help" but this is irrelevant.
oops, then i should delete the above.
what *is* relevant is dangerous, self-destructive, possibly deadly patterns of behavior. this is life and death shit, and warm fuzzies from other people in this newsgroup are not going to make it stop being so dangerous.
true. true for me also. i am sorry, angel; i’m not mad at you, i promise. i am just frustrated that the focus seems (to me) to be drifting onto propositions like "the adults want the teens sent packing" or "people want me to leave" (which are only red herrings, because neither of them are true), and drifting off what i think (in my opinion) is the major issue here — namely, speaking to adri now, do you want help? are you willing to accept help? do you recognize how serious this is?
ok, i’m climbing off the soap box now then. thanks. sorry for the rant. -c
