Question:

What medication (names please) would make her feel happy again and give her back the smile she always had on her face when she was working ?

There are so many medications for anti-depression – that it would be impossible to name what would be right for her here.  Her best bet would be to see a doctor.   If she’s like my mom,  she probably won’t believe she has a depression that can be treated.  So herbs might be a good way to start,  like St John’s Wort – which you can get over the counter at just about every grocery store. It’s possible that she is not depressed at all though,  and just is at a loss as to what to do with her time.  If she is physically able maybe you can talk her into doing some volunteer work.  Public schools are always looking for volunteers and I think volunteering to help children can be very rewarding. But there are lots of other things she could volunteer for.   in faith, Grace . Oooh, ooh, I love giving advice. My mom used to be a very happy, smiling, light-hearted person before she retired. Now, she’s always incredbly sad and gloomy. What medication (names please) would make her feel happy again and give her back the smile she always had on her face when she was working ?

Treatment totally depends on what the problem is.  There isn’t a single ‘happy’ pill.  Too bad. Does your Mother think she has a problem?  If not, there isn’t much you can do for her, except badger her and nag at her until she sees a doctor just to shut you up, which won’t fix anything anyway. What does your Mother think of her situation? Tripp

Response:

She needs to be seen by a therapist or psych. to determine the best route. Perhaps she’s just bored.

Stef, Your mom may just be experiencing sheer boredom. If she has always worked and/or she is a classic work-aholic then she needs to get involved in volunteering. There are many places were she may volunteer: hospital, library, shelter, day care(maybe), and more. She does not have to volunteer all the time and she could pick and chose her hours. Broach the topic over dinner, coffee, or over the phone. It may just be the thing she needs. But do follow Misty’s advice as well: – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -You are a sweet daughter to care about her and to want to help her. However, we cannot tell you what medication will help her, or even if her problem can be solved with medicine at all. The first thing to do is to persuade her to see a doctor. A regular personal physician or family doctor (hopefully someone she is familiar with) can give her various tests to determine whether a physical problem might be causing her to feel this way. For example, many women become depressed because their thyroid glands stop working properly as they age. For many of them, taking a thyroid hormone pill can return their cheerful nature. If no physical reason is found, that doctor might refer her to another who has experience treating mood disorders. Good luck, Stef. If she is feeling very depressed, you may have to push her hard to get the help she needs. Be persistent; I am sure it will be worth it for both of you. misty My mom used to be a very happy, smiling, light-hearted person before she retired. Now, she’s always incredbly sad and gloomy.
