Suicide, Suicidal Thoughts and Depression

Not all people who are depressive will end up committing suicide but it is not rare for those who are depressed to have suicidal thoughts. It does not necessarily mean they will act on these thoughts. The fact is that people who are in episodes of severe depression will not have the necessary strength or energy to commit suicide. It is when the depression begins to lift that is actually the dangerous time when with renewed energy the person may actually try to attempt suicide.

Suicide and suicidal thoughts can be complications or effects of major depressive disorders and should never be taken lightly. They can also be symptoms and if not diagnosed and treated could also develop into moderate or severe depressive disorder. If you suspect someone is suicidal you should try to encourage them into seeking professional help and try not to leave them alone.

Suicides account for 15 percent of deaths of those who are clinically depressed

Suicide is the 8th leading cause of death in the United States with 10.6 percent of every 100,000 people

More women attempt suicide than men but more men are successful at it than women

All too often even in today’s enlightened society a lot of people who hear of or witness a suicide attempt take the attitude that “it is just a bid for attention”, the fact is they suicide attempts are usually people who are in severe distress and should never be taken lightly

Risk Factors That Affect Suicide

Life stressors, trauma or traumatic episodes in combination with other major risk factors can all work in unison to put a person at risk for suicide. Most people however may experience more than one or two of the following risk factors and even become depressive but still not have suicidal thoughts or tendencies.

At least one if not more major depressive disorders

Impulsive behavior

Adverse life events

Family history of depression, alcohol or drug abuse, violence, physical or sexual abuse

Firearms in home

Incarceration

Separation or divorce

Being around and exposed to people with depressive disorders

Treatment Course for those affected by depression that are suicidal or have suicidal thoughts:

Treatments can range from psychotherapy, gentle reassurance up to and including involuntary hospital admission. Depending on the severity of the suicidal tendencies and frequency of suicidal thoughts a person may be allowed to go home but
