Strange as it may sound there are a variety of foods sources which are better for the individual than other foods. The main reason is because of the natural chemicals in the food. It is also how these special foods react within certain individuals. St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) is one which is an herb used for centuries to treat a variety of illnesses including mild depression. The Food and Drug Administration has not approved St. John’s Wort in the treatment of mild depression, but it is nonetheless being used and studied in other countries.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Polyunsaturated Fats) found mainly in seafood products such as salmon, mackerel, and herring to name a few. Other items containing polyunsaturated fats are flaxseed, flaxseed oil, and walnuts, and nuts of all kinds are also a very good source of protein all good for the balance of certain individual suffering from depression.
Foods for individuals with depression symptoms are turkey and bananas which are high in Tryptophan both wonderful foods to add to a daily diet. Americans seem to be suffering from so many depression effects because far too many individuals concentrate on eating only fat free foods. This in and of itself is not a good idea because the natural body craves the necessary fats, especially the saturated fats. The individuals, especially those taking depression medication will want to absolutely avoid fat-free and carbohydrate-free foods because it will cause more depression symptoms to surface adding to the problems rather than it will help.
Foods to pay attention too and add to the daily diet for a healthy and balanced system is milk, but not skim milk, whole milk. Remember that the fat intake must remain higher than the sugar intake or the individual will gain weight. Some of the rules are to remember to eat in moderation and to avoid the artificial sugar. Other foods that will benefit those individuals who are depressed are a variety of fruits along with the nuts mentioned earlier. Dark chocolate, but only in moderation and the occasional low sugar ice cream is fine too. All individuals need some comfort food from time to time, but moderation is the key.
Following a specific diet is part of the depression self-help that all individual can take part while under medication and a medical physician’s care. Part of it involves pure common sense, as in not to over indulge in the comfort foods and to increase outdoor activities either alone or with family members and close friends. Depression as most individuals know is generally a low self-esteem, lack of confidence action and with the many programs and medications available there is a never-ending supply of assistance. The interesting reason why it is important to eat sugars in scant moderation is because of the imbalance of the sugar highs and the sugar lows which play havoc with all individual systems. Considering the fact that the individual is trying to find balance sugar is one to avoid as much as possible.
Foods to avoid are the greasy foods such as French fries, coke, donuts, cakes with sugar icing and other foods in this category. Overcoming depression takes a conscious effort as well as a physical and mental effort and the individual must concentrate and follow the instructions given by the medical physician in the hopes of one day finding balance and living out a healthy, normal life.
