Overcoming Depression

There are many different schools of thought that offer varied and sundry solutions to overcoming depression. There is a common consensus on ways to alleviate and put into remission symptoms of the most common mood disorder known as depression and its sub-types or variants.

Seeking out a well-qualified, licensed and trained mental health professional is a crucial first step to overcoming depression. The best place to start is your family doctor or general practitioner. Often times, they will have a knowledge of a specific mental health specialist (psychiatrist, psychologist, and/or psychotherapist) to refer you to. Also, you’re insurer may have a list of qualified and in-network specialists on their website. Finally, if symptoms are severe enough, help is just a phone call away in any emergency by dialing 9-1-1 or visit your local emergency room.

Medical treatment is the next step to overcoming depression. Recovering from any illness requires a sound medical approach, and once you’ve selected a mental health specialist, they will start you on a treatment plan that may include a variety of specialized and specific treatments (treatment for depressive disorder is often tailored to the particular patient rather than a “one shoe fits all approach”). Common treatments will include medication with anti-depressants (pharmacotherapy) if the depression is severe enough and therapy sessions with a licensed and trained psychologist or therapist (psychotherapy).
Anti-depressant medication is offered in a diversity of brands and target treatments. Your doctor may use trial and error approach to find which medication or combination of medications that work best for you. It is important during this process to communicate effectively with your physician. Be sure to tell him of any and all side effects, thoughts of suicide, or ineffective response to the drug in question.

Psychotherapy can help the patient understand the underlying causes to their depressive disorder. Personal factors can be attributed to a history of abuse (whether physical, emotional, and/or sexual), maladjustment to social environment or situation such as employment and finances and poor support system. Consequently, these personal factors often manifest themselves as negative thoughts or negative self-talk. It is important for the patient to realize that he/she has the ability to control his/her thoughts. Many times, our thoughts or mental reactions to certain situations or stimuli are habitual. Learning new habits and self-talk is part of the process your psychotherapist will lead you through using a variety of techniques.

There is an array of non-medical or complementary treatments to overcoming depression. Always consult with your doctor and/or mental health specialist when determining the best approach to treating depression. In many cases people have found increased physical activity to be essential in combating depression. Also, develop and/or rekindle interests and activities (hobbies) will help in overcoming depresion . Interests and activities can be helpful to alleviating stress, one of the main causations of depressive disorder, and can contribute positively to self-esteem and happiness.

In summary, first’s things first, find a licensed well-qualified mental health specialist. Work with them in determining your treatment plan to overcoming depression whether it’s via pharmacotherapy (prescription medication), psychotherapy (therapeutic sessions with a psychologist or licensed therapist) or both. Remember, there are things that you can do to help ease and or put into remission depression symptoms. Developing and/or rekindling interests and activities, physical exercise (no matter how minimal) and positive thinking are just some of the many ways that have proven to be effective in overcoming depression.
