Coping with depression for one family member to help another family member to regain their self-esteem and confidence? Is it possible for one family member to have the necessary patience and tools to help another family member? What does an individual do when the loved one, especially when it is a husband or wife, refuses any assistance? How are families to cope and try to understand the silent suffering of another? An individual with a very depressed attitude and bad self-image is difficult for families to understand. Yet, if they intend to help the other family member in overcoming depression they will join forces and try their best.
Frustration begins to set in when the individual who is in need of assistance fighting depression refuses any and all help. Perhaps this is now the opportunity to search on the outside for assistance. When an individual is truly hurting inside it is more than likely difficult for them to express what they are feeling because the mental depression has taken them over. This occurs physically as well as mentally because any of the mental disorders will eventually manifest themselves into physical ailments such as headaches, general aches and pains throughout their bodies, backaches. The depressed family member will also begin to drag all the family members down because of the mood that spreads.
There are times when playing music the other family members enjoys will help break the mood, if not try cooking a meal together and then sit down as a family to enjoy the feast while carrying on a light conversation to try to boost the mood of the family member. The family members could try doing something on the spur of the moment and try going out to a local movie or out to dinner and see if that helps. Of course, much will depend upon the severity of the depressive disorder before trying anything new or different because it may cause more discord than already exists.
Depression and anxiety are a common psychiatric disorder in the modern world and a growing cause of concern for the healthcare industry today. Counseling may be another option for the family to discuss openly. If the family thinks the depression is chronic depression outside assistance is something worthwhile looking into before proceeding any further. How the family will handle the situation if they believe it is genetic will be another approach to consider.
Family members who are suffering from various signs of depression would be wise to visit with a medical physician and receive a more accurate diagnosis. Whether the family member decides to remain with the advice of the medical physician or if the depression symptoms are not very severe the family member may attempt to handle it through determination with other family members close. Setting up a daily routine to help organize the family members life is a step in the positive direction as well. Deciding what the interest is and acting upon them will help to build self-esteem and confidence that accomplishments are possible. All depression medication serves a purpose, but the family member is much better off with the least amount of medication. Sooner or later the family member must learn to understand limitations like everyone must.
