Length of the process will depend on the skills and expertise of the medical physician that an individual makes an appointment to visit. When the physician is fully versed in depression tests and understands the workings of depression the test will be simple and move along quickly. The family medical physician when the individual takes the time to talk and explain helps. What the individual is experiencing and feeling must be expressive as there are signs of depression the medical physician will pick up on the individual may be unaware. The family medical physician is not ready to offer a complete and thorough diagnosis, but will refer the individual who is suffering from mental depression to a psychiatrist or psychologist for further review. This same psychiatrist will at this time offer a medical prescription for amitriptyliene, wellbutrin, lexapro, effexor, abilify, lithium, lamictal, neurontin, remeron, or any of the other depression medications to begin the depression treatment the individual is suffering.

This will help with the next visit with the psychiatrist because they can either increase or decrease the medication. The professional psychiatrist might ask you to stop taking what you had and prescribe a new medication. The idea is to aid in the progress of the individual to a healthier emotional state than when the patient first came to the psychiatrist’s office. Individuals suffering from depression still need to talk with a close family member, a member of the religious community, or any friend they hold near, and dear. When the psychiatrist begins to see changes not in a positive direction the psychiatrist will prescribe another depression medication either to replace the one the individual is currently taking or to take along with the original prescription medication.
