Families who are suffering from the effects of a family member involved with depression need to gain the assistance of the medical community. Many times it is the individual who the family must convince to see the family medical physician to arrange for a depression test and to have a complete physical examination. This is to make certain there are no major physical ailments that are causing any of the depression symptoms. When this procedure reaches completion the medical physician will sit down with the family members to explain the best course of action to proceed.

However to determine the exact cause that triggers signs of depression reaction with some individuals is scientifically unexplainable, yet it does exist. It is possible that perhaps the imbalance or reaction to biochemical, genetic and environmental factors contribute. Biochemical is a reaction to change in brain function that is a natural occurrence. The study incorporating the genes leans towards a biological or genetic disorder that follows family lines. Then there is the environmental factor that plays a fairly large role in depression through the death of a family member, loss of employment, and at times personal financial situations.

Statistically within any given year there are on average twelve million adults in the United States diagnosed with depression and though the statistics are not clear there are children diagnosed with depression too. Children in their teens are the ones likely to be afflicted because of peer pressure and the pressure to perform well. A series of examinations including the physical examination, laboratory tests which include a complete blood count (CBC), screening for alcohol and drugs, and a check of the thyroid function. The psychological evaluation comes last to evaluate thoughts, emotions, behavior patterns and the medical examiner will try to ascertain what caused the onset of the depression.

Regardless of the desired treatment decided upon, psychotherapy, depression medication, or a combination of medications most individuals who receive a diagnosis of some form of depression can be treated safely as an outpatient with regular scheduled appointments. There are a few individuals with depression severe enough to warrant inpatient care, which is a hospital stay, but this is not the norm. Inpatient care is necessary for those individuals with more serious depression symptoms such as those who are toying with the idea of possible suicide.

Many symptoms of depression diagnosis sometimes make it difficult to pin point which of the maladies the individual has because it may be complicated with more than one of the depression symptoms. In this case, treatment through one of the various antidepressants in conjunction with depression therapy is advisable to help the individual regain self-esteem and confidence one-step at a time. Unfortunately without any treatment, which sometimes occurs when individuals refuse to acknowledge they even need help, the symptoms will continue to fester until the individual can no longer stand the psychological agony.

Individuals receiving outpatient care needs family members to help monitor the daily situations keep track of the depression symptoms the individual is suffering. The medical physician or depression therapist will talk with the family members and try to explain in which direction they are to focus. The therapist will explain the many changes so the family members fully understand what is about to occur. Part of the depression therapy is to change the daily diet by reducing the sugar intake and increasing the protein. This can be challenging, but the family will soon get the idea and keeping fruits and nuts in the house will be a plus for the depressed individual.
