Sometimes lifestyle changes are not enough. You may need to find help to stick to your depression treatment plan. A psychotherapist can often help in cases of mild to moderate depression. Therapy can train you in positive thinking, or help you see which of your actions or relationships might be hurting you. Often therapists will use a combination of treatments.

There are also a variety of depression drugs that may help you start to feel better. There are fields of thought that suggest a chemical imbalance in the brain may be partly at fault. At this point though, there is no way to test brain chemicals in a living person. But researchers have found that some people respond to medications that help restore levels of feel good neurotransmitters such as serotonin.

They are aimed at increasing those “feel good” brain chemicals that may be out of whack. Medication seems to be most beneficial in the most severe cases of depression. Sometimes, those who are feeling better with the medication find it’s not a long term fix. Some people start to slip into despair again. Just as depression symptoms vary from person to person, so does the recovery plan. What works for one person, may not be successful for another. Sometimes you have to try a variety to treatments before you find something that meets your individual needs. Sometimes a combination of medication, therapy and lifestyle changes will lead to recovery.

Depression usually doesn’t happen overnight, nor can it be cured as quickly. It requires determination and perseverance to recover. Usually permanent lifestyle changes are needed to prevent a recurrence of depression symptoms.
