Depression

Depression by itself is such a vague term revealing very little of what truly lies behind it. Individual’s lives are at stake and there is an ocean of wealth for the individual to understand and cope. Unfortunately it takes a medical physician to make a proper diagnosis of an individual suffering from depression symptoms because there are so many categories to choose. Categories such as:

Mood disorder, unipolar depression, depressed mood, and bipolar depression

Major depressive disorder, dysthymia, and seasonal affective disorder

Cyclothymia, and postpartum depression

Listing of the majority of depression disorders that afflict millions of individuals and cause so much grief and upset within the home. Individuals with mood disorders do experience many mood swings and many of these mood swings are at the opposite sides of the life spectrum. Statistically within any given year there are on average twelve million adults in the United States diagnosed with depression and though the statistics are not clear there are children diagnosed with depression too.

Children in their teens are the ones likely to be afflicted because of peer pressure and the pressure to perform well. A series of examinations including the physical examination, laboratory tests which include a complete blood count (CBC), screening for alcohol and drugs, and a check of the thyroid function. The psychological evaluation comes last to evaluate thoughts, emotions, behavior patterns and the medical examiner will try to ascertain what caused the onset of the depression.

Regardless of the desired treatment decided upon, psychotherapy, depression medication, or a combination of medications most individuals who receive a diagnosis of some form of depression can be treated safely as an outpatient with regular scheduled appointments. There are a few individuals with depression severe enough to warrant inpatient care, which is a hospital stay, but this is not the norm. Inpatient care is necessary for those individuals with more serious depression symptoms such as those who are toying with the idea of possible suicide.

Many symptoms of depression diagnosis sometimes make it difficult to pin point which of the maladies the individual has because it may be complicated with more than one of the depression symptoms. In this case, treatment through one of the various antidepressants in conjunction with depression therapy is advisable to help the individual regain self-esteem and confidence one-step at a time. Unfortunately without any treatment, which sometimes occurs when individuals refuse to acknowledge they even need help, the symptoms will continue to fester until the individual can no longer stand the psychological agony.

Individuals inflicted with the malady of major depressive episodes are most at risk because the next step is usually thoughts of contemplating suicide or the individual is in so much emotional pain they attempt suicide. This is a point in an individual’s life where close friends and family members are desperately in need to help the individual cursed with causes of depression to find through the family medical physician a psychiatrist, psychologist or other therapist to cease these emotions from occurring.

There are times when family members who are aware of the desperation of the depression symptoms will try to take the individual to the nearest community hospital for depression treatment. This is a very stressful and agonizing time for the family members. This is the point of no return when it becomes vital to seek professional assistance at all cost. The depression effects are so overwhelming for the hurting individual and time is of particular essence.
